The New iPhone 13 Is Here! Here’s What We Know So Far
It’s official—Apple’s iPhone 13 lineup is officially here. While the iPhones just hit the market, users are already singing the praises of the improved cameras, especially those in the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max. The iPhone 12 remains a great option as well, but the iPhone 13 offers a few key improvements over the previous generation.
The iPhone 13 options include (from smallest to largest), the iPhone 13 Mini, the iPhone 13, the iPhone 13 Pro, and the iPhone 13 Pro Max. Like just about every other piece of tech, the “best” choice of these remains in the eye of the beholder. If you need a super compact option, for example, the Mini might appeal to you. Or if you need a powerful camera, the Pro or Pro Max would be your best bet.
dToday, we’re breaking down what we know about each device and their updated specs — so you can choose the right iPhone 13 for your needs.
The iPhone 13: What’s New
In general, every phone in the iPhone 13 lineup offers a few upgrades from last year’s iterations. These include a longer battery life (up to 2.5 hours) and improved cameras. The iPhone 13 models also contain the A15 bionic chip with new 6-core CPUs and a 16-core neural engine.
Another new element that wasn’t seen on last year’s models is Cinematic Mode. This feature allows users to employ “rack focus” when transitioning from one subject to the next, all in the same shot. Users can also change who the focus is on after the fact, during the post-production process, which we think is an amazing feature. And the new sensor-shift optical image stabilization feature ensures that videos or films are steady, resulting in a more professional product.
Each phone is 5G compatible. While we don’t know when 5G will be available everywhere, it’s important to have that technology included for when you do have access, or for when you’re utilizing a 5G Wi-Fi hotspot.
iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Mini
The iPhone 13 and the iPhone 13 Mini are what most “average” users likely need. If you’re not overly concerned about a camera or other high-tech advantages of the other options that are available, these phones are ideal. They still boast features like incredible speed, 5G compatibility, and improved battery life.
Display + Size: The iPhone 13 has a 6.1” display, while the Mini is offered in a 5.4” display. Both options have Super Retina XDR OLED displays. The new OLED display gets 28% brighter than the previous version, for improved visibility in bright sunlight.
Battery: The iPhone 13 boasts up to 2.5 more hours of battery life than previous editions.
Cameras: Apple calls the camera system on the iPhone 13 “our most advanced dual-camera system ever.” Note that this is a dual-camera system; there’s no third camera like the one included in the Pro and Pro Max. That said, the cameras on the iPhone 13 boast improvements. These include sensor-shift optical image stabilization for better stability, a faster sensor on the Ultra Wide camera for improved detail in low-light situations, and a 47% increase in light-capturing in the Wide camera.
Best for: The iPhone 13 Mini is a great choice for those who prefer, well, a mini option. Its small size makes it extra compact and portable. The iPhone 13 is best for anyone who wants a straightforward but powerful device. It’s mid-sized, mid-range, reliable option. Its cameras are great, and it offers a much-improved battery life.
iPhone 13 Pro
The iPhone 13 Pro is a stellar phone. While the display is smaller than the Pro Max, its camera system is the same as the larger version. If a huge display isn’t your thing but you’re wanting the camera power of the Pro Max, this is your answer.
Display + Size: The iPhone 13 Pro has a 6.1” Super Retina XDR display with ProMotion. The Pro’s display is the same as the iPhone 13.
Battery: The Pro’s battery life is up to 1.5 hours longer than that of previous generations.
Cameras: The Pro contains the 12MP camera system consisting of a Telephoto camera, a Wide camera, and an Ultra Wide camera. It offers 3x optical zoom in and 2x optical zoom out. Like the iPhone 12 version, the Pro boasts night mode with LiDAR, Deep Fusion, Apple ProRAW, and the ability to capture in HEIF or JPEG formats. A major camera difference between the iPhone 13 and the Pro is that the Pro includes the 77mm Telephoto camera that the iPhone 13 doesn’t have. The detail that you can get in this phone’s photography is also improved: now there’s macro photography for crisp super close-up shots. Plus, the Wide camera is capable of capturing over 2x more light, and the Ultra Wide camera is capable of capturing 92% more light, than previous models for detail during dark shoots.
Extras: ProMotion is tech that’s featured for the first time on the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max models. It’s beneficial because it makes any content you’re viewing that’s in motion extremely fluid and detailed. The refresh rates go up to 120 Hz with ProMotion.
Best for: The iPhone 13 Pro is great for users who want an excellent camera — and all the other bells and whistles — without the weight and size of the Pro Max.
iPhone 13 Pro Max
If you’re a producer, videographer, photographer, or just general iPhone enthusiast, the 13 Pro Max is likely the most appealing to you. It’s got an amazing camera system, a huge display, and great battery life.
Display + Size: The Pro Max has a 6.7” Super Retina XDR display with ProMotion.
Battery: The Pro Max’s battery can last up an additional 2.5 hours, compared to the last models.
Cameras: The Pro Max cameras are the same as the Pro, so they include a Telephoto, Wide, and Ultra Wide camera. The Pro Max cameras also boast the other innovations that the Pro cameras offer: true tone flash, macro photography, ProRAW, Deep Fusion, and more. Of note is that the zoom improved by a bit on the 13 Pro Max as compared to the iPhone 12 Pro Max; there’s a 3x zoom rather than a 2.5x zoom.
Extras: The iPhone Pro Max can stream up to 25 hours of video and offers up to 1TB of internal storage (which is a lot for a phone).
Best for: This powerful device is best for photographers, videographers, content creators, and anyone who wants a phone that’s also an incredible camera with a large display and ample storage.
